Data & Society’s Media Manipulation Initiative looks at how various qualities of media environments and technologies can be exploited to destabilize democratic, social, and economic institutions. The initiative has produced reports on algorithmic accountability, source hacking, weaponized advertising technology, the amplification of extremist content, and alternative facts, among other topics. Its affiliates have also produced a report on deepfakes and the history of audiovisual manipulation.
